The American Section offers a challenging American curriculum in Language/Literature and History/Geography, and follows best practices in current American pedagogy. Our classes are taught in addition to the full French program, as defined by the Ministry of Education. Students leaving the American Section are well prepared to enter demanding Anglophone schools at their appropriate grade level, and our graduates go on to top-ranked universities worldwide.

The French curriculum is taught in French by certified Education Nationale teachers. Considered one of the most rigorous and comprehensive programs in the world, it prepares students for success in highly-selective universities.

The Lycée International has consistently been rated one of France’s top ten public schools with a pass rate of 99-100% in the French Baccalaureate with International Option (OIB). Within the American Section, the success rate has been 100% since 1985.

The Option Internationale du Baccalauréat (OIB) was replaced by the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI) in September, 2022. The first exam session of the BFI was in 2024.

American Section BFI & OIB Results

The baccalaureat pass rate of American Section students has been 100% since 1985, and our student’s mention (honors) rate is equally impressive, far exceeding the national average. Overall grades of 12-14 receive the mention assez bien (honors). From 14-16 they are awarded mention bien (high honors) and averages over 16 warrant the mention très bien (highest honors). Students with mention très bien avec félicitations du jury have averages higher than 18.

Note that the BFI replaced the OIB in 2024.

What is the BFI?

The BFI is a particularly demanding version of the French baccalaureat, which offers multiple pathways to expand their international exposure and linguistic skills. In addition to the full French national curriculum, students at the Lycée International take eight additional hours of classes in the language of their section, taught at native level. Students take three BFI subjects: English Language and Literature (ACL) and History and Geography (DNL), and Connaissance du Monde (CdM), or Contemporary US Society.

BFI exam coefficents comprise 41% of the baccalaureat. Spoken communication skills are emphasized, with students preparing a “capstone” oral presention for an individual research project in addition to the existing oral examinations in Language/Literature and History/Geography and the Grand Oral.

In the case of the American version of the BFI, examiners are approved by the Franco-American (Fulbright) Commission, with authority delegated by the College Board (creators of the SAT and Advanced Placement exams).

All American Section Terminale students take the BFI. Students obtain their final score based on a weighted average of all grades on the various disciplines tested through written and oral examinations. S/he passes when this overall score is at least 10 on a 0–20 scale. Each year in France about 80% of all Terminale students pass their academic Baccalaureate examinations.

What is the OIB?

The Option International du Baccalauréat (OIB) was a special version of the French Baccalaureate created by French educational authorities in 1985 in cooperation with various other countries, including the United States. To obtain this international version of the Baccalaureate, students passed rigorous oral and written examinations in language/literature and history/geography in the language of the cooperating country in addition to the standard French baccalauréat exams.

The Class of 2023 was the last class to sit the OIB. The class of 2024 was the first to sit the the Baccalauréat Français International (BFI) exam.
